Talk and respond play

How to Do This Activity

When your child makes sounds, pause and respond with your own sounds or words. Wait for them to respond back. Keep this back-and-forth going for a few exchanges. Watch their face and body to see when they are interested and when they need a break.

Why It Works

This serve-and-return interaction teaches your child that their communications matter and that you will respond. Responsive interaction builds neural connections and creates the foundation for secure attachment. Children who experience consistent responsive care show better emotion expression and regulation later in childhood (Borelli et al., 2021).

Tips for Parents

Your child may look away or become quiet when they need a pause. This is normal and healthy. You don't need to use special baby talk. Your natural voice works well.
