How to Do This Activity
During any quiet moment together, make a simple sound and wait for your child to respond. When they make any sound back, respond to their sound with enthusiasm and a similar sound. Continue this back-and-forth for several turns. This vocal play can happen during floor time, while sitting together, or during any transition between activities.
Why It Works
This activity focuses purely on the turn-taking rhythm of conversation without the complexity of words or objects. Quality of early communication, particularly turn-taking and responsiveness, predicts later language and social communication skills (Hirsh-Pasek et al., 2015). By engaging in these vocal exchanges, you're teaching your child the fundamental structure of conversation while validating their attempts to communicate, which research links to higher relationship satisfaction and communication effectiveness later in life (Hartos & Power, 2000).
Tips for Parents
Start with sounds your child already makes, like ba or da. This makes it easier for them to respond.
Give your child plenty of time to respond. Count to five slowly in your head before making another sound.
Show excitement when your child takes their turn. Your facial expressions teach them that communication is enjoyable.
