Rolling practice party
0–6 monthsSuccess MindsetNo materials needed
During tummy time or play, encourage your child's rolling attempts by placing interesting objects to their side. As they work to roll toward the object, describe what you see: 'You're twisting your body' or 'Your legs are pushing hard'. Celebrate each attempt, whether they succeed or not, focusing your words on their effort and strategy. Let them work through the challenge for a minute or two before offering help.

How to Do This Activity
During tummy time or play, encourage your child's rolling attempts by placing interesting objects to their side. As they work to roll toward the object, describe what you see: 'You're twisting your body' or 'Your legs are pushing hard'. Celebrate each attempt, whether they succeed or not, focusing your words on their effort and strategy. Let them work through the challenge for a minute or two before offering help.
Why It Works
Rolling is a perfect opportunity to establish growth mindset patterns because it requires multiple attempts and strategy adjustments. By praising the process rather than the outcome, you help build resilience after setbacks. Studies demonstrate that growth mindset interventions lead to greater resilience and active seeking of challenges (Blackwell, L. S., Trzesniewski, K. H., & Dweck, C. S., 2007). Movement-based learning strengthens both motor and cognitive development, and your narration helps your child connect effort with progress from the earliest months.
Tips for Parents
Start with objects on their easier rolling side, then gradually try the other direction as they gain confidence.
If they become frustrated, you can gently support their hip or shoulder while still letting them do most of the work. This teaches persistence with support.
