How to Do This Activity
When you're playing together or out for a walk, point out interesting things and encourage your child to point too. Say 'look, a bird' or 'I see a truck.' Respond with interest when they point to share something with you. This back-and-forth builds early conversation skills and social connection.
Why It Works
Joint attention and sharing observations are foundational social communication skills. This reciprocal interaction teaches children that their thoughts and interests matter to others. Early social-emotional functioning, including communication skills, strongly predicts educational completion and employment, with children showing higher social competence being twice as likely to graduate college (Jones et al., 2015).
