Create a safe space on the floor and let your child move their body however they want for a few minutes each day. They might kick their legs, wave their arms, roll to one side, or simply lie still and observe. Resist the urge to direct or reposition them unless they need help. This freedom to move builds body awareness, strength, and confidence in their physical abilities.

How to Do This Activity
Create a safe space on the floor and let your child move their body however they want for a few minutes each day. They might kick their legs, wave their arms, roll to one side, or simply lie still and observe. Resist the urge to direct or reposition them unless they need help. This freedom to move builds body awareness, strength, and confidence in their physical abilities.
Why It Works
Movement-based learning supports both cognitive and physical development. When infants explore movement independently, they build motor skills and confidence. Research shows that children who experience appropriate autonomy support develop better self-regulation and competence, and healthy autonomy develops within secure attachment (Grolnick & Ryan, 1989).
Tips for Parents
Ensure the space is safe with a soft surface and no hazards nearby. Then step back and observe.
Your child may not move much at first. Even small movements like turning their head are valuable.
Stay close and engaged, but let your child lead. You can narrate what you see without directing their actions.
