How to Do This Activity
Sit with your child in front of a mirror during play. Smile at your reflections and use warm expressions. Point to your child's reflection and say "I see you" with delight. Make gentle faces and watch your child begin to imitate your positive expressions.
Why It Works
Infants learn emotional patterns through imitation and repeated exposure to positive facial expressions. When they see and mirror joyful expressions regularly, they develop neural pathways associated with positive emotional states. Research demonstrates that optimistic dispositions developed through early positive experiences lead to better coping strategies and higher life satisfaction (Carver, C. S., Scheier, M. F., & Segerstrom, S. C. (2010). Optimism. Clinical Psychology Review, 30(7), 879-889.).
Tips for Parents
Keep sessions brief, around two to three minutes, to match your child's attention span.
Model the expressions you want to see. Your child learns emotions by watching your face.
Make this a regular part of your routine. Repetition builds learning and positive expectations.
