Hold your child at eye level and talk to them about anything. Describe what you see, what you're doing, or just make gentle sounds. Pause after you speak and wait for your child to respond with coos, gurgles, or facial expressions. Then respond back to their sounds. This back-and-forth exchange builds the foundation for all future conversations and relationships.

How to Do This Activity

Hold your child at eye level and talk to them about anything. Describe what you see, what you're doing, or just make gentle sounds. Pause after you speak and wait for your child to respond with coos, gurgles, or facial expressions. Then respond back to their sounds. This back-and-forth exchange builds the foundation for all future conversations and relationships.

Why It Works

These serve-and-return interactions are essential for building social brain circuitry. Strong social connections significantly enhance happiness, reduce stress, and contribute to better overall health outcomes (Holt-Lunstad, Smith, & Layton, 2010). Starting these patterns early helps your child develop the neural pathways needed for healthy relationships throughout life.

Tips for Parents

Position your child about 8-12 inches from your face, which is the ideal distance for young babies to see clearly. If your child looks away, that's okay. They may need a break. Try again in a few minutes.
