How to Do This Activity

Create a simple path on the floor using cushions, rolled blankets, or soft toys. Place interesting objects at different points along the path. Encourage your child to move through the course by crawling, rolling, or scooting. Stay close by for safety and encouragement. You can crawl alongside them to model the movement. Rearrange the course each time to keep it interesting and challenging.

Why It Works

Navigating obstacles builds gross motor skills, spatial awareness, and problem-solving abilities. Movement-based learning supports cognitive development as children figure out how to move through space (de Greeff, J. W., et al., 2018). Creating regular opportunities for active exploration establishes healthy movement patterns from early infancy.

Tips for Parents

Keep obstacles low and soft for safety, no higher than a few inches. Place favorite toys or objects at the end as motivation. Follow your child through the course to make it a shared activity.
