Show your child simple high-contrast images or patterns, like black and white stripes, dots, or simple shapes. Hold each card about eight to 12 inches from their face for a few moments, then slowly move it side to side. Young infants are drawn to bold contrasts and will track the movement with their eyes, exercising their visual attention.

How to Do This Activity
Show your child simple high-contrast images or patterns, like black and white stripes, dots, or simple shapes. Hold each card about eight to 12 inches from their face for a few moments, then slowly move it side to side. Young infants are drawn to bold contrasts and will track the movement with their eyes, exercising their visual attention.
Why It Works
High-contrast visual stimuli capture infant attention and support visual development. When infants attend to novel visual information, they are exercising curiosity-driven learning. This early visual curiosity engages neural pathways that support later cognitive development (Gruber et al., 2014). Fostering curiosity during infancy optimizes learning potential and academic achievement (Arnone et al., 2011).
Tips for Parents
Use just two or three cards per session. Your child's attention span is short, and brief exposure is more effective than lengthy sessions.
Notice when your child looks away. This is their way of saying they need a break from visual input.
