How to Do This Activity
When your child is upset or scared, stop what you are doing and provide comfort right away. Hold them, speak soothingly, and stay with them until they calm down. Your consistent presence during hard moments teaches them you are a safe haven they can always return to.
Why It Works
Providing immediate comfort during distress is fundamental to secure attachment formation. Secure attachments help children develop better emotional regulation and the ability to cope with fear and stress throughout life (Canadian Psychological Association, 2024). When you consistently respond to distress, your child learns to use you as a secure base for managing difficult emotions.
Tips for Parents
You cannot spoil a child this young by offering too much comfort. Responding builds security, not dependence.
If you do not know why they are upset, your calm presence still helps. Being there is what matters most.
Notice what helps your child calm down. Some prefer gentle rocking, others like to be held still.
