How to Do This Activity
Find safe places for your child to practice climbing. This might be a small step stool, couch cushions on the floor, or toddler climbing toys. Stay close and offer a hand for balance. Let them climb up and down repeatedly as they build strength and confidence.
Why It Works
Climbing develops gross motor skills that are rapidly advancing during toddlerhood. Children who engage in functional physical training show measurable improvements in motor competence and cognitive abilities including spatial memory (Hao et al., 2023). Climbing builds full-body strength, coordination, and spatial awareness while meeting toddlers' natural drive to explore vertically.
Tips for Parents
Supervise closely but try not to hover. Let them work through small challenges.
Practice going down as much as going up. Getting down safely is an important skill.
