Cause and feeling connection

How to Do This Activity

Help your child notice the connection between what happens and how it feels. When something startles them, say 'That loud noise surprised you.' When they succeed at grabbing something, say 'You're happy because you got it.' Understanding cause and effect with emotions helps your child begin to recognize patterns in how feelings work.

Why It Works

Understanding simple cause and effect is a cognitive capability that emerges in infancy and provides a foundation for emotional understanding. When children begin to see connections between events and emotions, they develop early problem-solving skills and emotional awareness. This foundational understanding of how emotions work supports the development of emotional intelligence, including the ability to recognize emotional triggers and manage responses (Goleman, 1995).

Tips for Parents

Keep it simple and immediate. Point out the connection right when it happens so your child can see the relationship between the event and the feeling. Use their natural activities and play moments. You don't need special times for this, just narrate what's already happening.
