How to Do This Activity

During dressing, bathing, or playtime, gently touch different body parts and name them. Touch your child's nose and say nose. Then touch your own nose and say nose again. Wait to see if your child will point to or touch the body part you named.

Why It Works

This activity combines language-rich input with imitation and modeling, two evidence-based approaches that are especially powerful during this developmental stage. The conversational turn-taking involved creates the type of quality interaction that research shows predicts language ability better than passive word exposure (Hirsh-Pasek et al., 2015). Naming body parts also gives your child concrete vocabulary they can use to communicate their needs and experiences.

Tips for Parents

Start with easy ones like nose, toes, and belly. Add new body parts as your child learns. Make it playful but not overwhelming. A few body parts at a time is plenty. Celebrate any response. Pointing, looking, or touching all show your child is listening and learning.
