Welcome home reunion

How to Do This Activity

When you come home or your child returns from being away, take a moment to greet each other warmly. Get down to their level, make eye contact, and show genuine interest in reconnecting. You might share a hug or simply say, "I missed you. I am glad we are together now."

Why It Works

Consistent, warm reunions reinforce that you are emotionally available and strengthen your child's sense of security. Children classified as securely attached showed significantly less task-incongruent affect and more appropriate emotion expression during parent-child interactions (Borelli et al., 2021). These positive moments of reconnection help your child maintain close relationships throughout life (Ainsworth et al., 1978).

Tips for Parents

Put aside distractions for just a minute or two. Your child needs to feel they are your priority in that moment. Notice how your child approaches you. Some children rush in for hugs while others need a slower approach. Keep greetings warm and positive. This sets a good tone for your time together.
