Welcome home reconnection
4–5 yearsFamily ConnectionNo materials needed
When you reunite with your child after being apart, create a brief reconnection moment. This could be after work, after school, or after nap time. Greet them warmly, get down to their eye level, and spend a minute or two focused just on them. Ask about their time away and share something about yours. A hug or gentle touch helps reestablish connection.

How to Do This Activity
When you reunite with your child after being apart, create a brief reconnection moment. This could be after work, after school, or after nap time. Greet them warmly, get down to their eye level, and spend a minute or two focused just on them. Ask about their time away and share something about yours. A hug or gentle touch helps reestablish connection.
Why It Works
Secure attachment develops through consistent responsiveness during reunions after separation. Children classified as securely attached show significantly better emotional recovery and more appropriate emotion expression during parent-child interactions (Borelli et al., 2021). Warm reunions teach children that separations are temporary and connection can be reestablished.
Tips for Parents
Even if you are busy when you first see each other, take just one minute to connect. The transition matters more than the length.
Notice how your child greets you. Some children need space first before connecting, and that is okay too.
