Water the plants

How to Do This Activity

Give your child the responsibility of watering household plants once or twice a week. Show them how much water each plant needs, then make it their job. You can remind them when it is time but let them carry out the whole task themselves. This regular responsibility builds competence and trust.

Why It Works

Ongoing responsibility for living things teaches accountability and builds self-efficacy. Children learning appropriate independence through meaningful tasks maintain stronger family bonds while developing competence (Soenens & Vansteenkiste, 2010). This activity provides authentic opportunities for independent action during the initiative versus guilt stage, where supported autonomy predicts self-confidence and intrinsic motivation throughout development. Regular success with real responsibilities strengthens the parent-child relationship.

Tips for Parents

Use a small pitcher or cup they can handle easily. Mark the water level with a line or use a specific cup size so they know how much. If they spill, offer a cloth and let them clean it up themselves. You might say, spills happen, here is something to wipe it up. Acknowledge their consistent care with, the plants are healthy because you remember to water them.
