During calm moments, practice simple conflict phrases together. Say 'Let's practice what to say when you're upset. Can you say, my turn please?' Model the phrase and have your child repeat it. Practice phrases like 'I'm using this,' 'Can I have a turn?' and 'I don't like that.' Keep practice sessions short and playful, using a gentle voice.

How to Do This Activity

During calm moments, practice simple conflict phrases together. Say 'Let's practice what to say when you're upset. Can you say, my turn please?' Model the phrase and have your child repeat it. Practice phrases like 'I'm using this,' 'Can I have a turn?' and 'I don't like that.' Keep practice sessions short and playful, using a gentle voice.

Why It Works

Building a conflict resolution vocabulary gives children tools to express frustration without aggression. At this age, children are in a rapid vocabulary growth phase and can learn two to three-word combinations. Early training in these communication skills leads to significantly better peer relationships and reduced aggression (Webster-Stratton & Reid, 2004).

Tips for Parents

Practice when emotions are calm, not during actual conflicts. Use the same phrases consistently so they become familiar. Celebrate when your child uses these words during real situations. You might need to prompt them at first by saying 'What can you say?'
