Sit together with your child and drawing materials. Ask your child to draw a picture showing something you did for them that they appreciated. How to Do This Activity
Sit together with your child and drawing materials. Ask your child to draw a picture showing something you did for them that they appreciated. It could be making their favorite meal, reading bedtime stories, or playing together. As they draw, talk about what happened and why it mattered to them. When finished, have your child give you the picture and say what they are thankful for.
Why It Works
This activity combines drawing skills children have at this age with meaningful expression of gratitude. Research shows that gratitude interventions in children led to 15% improvement in relationship quality measures and better emotional communication with parents (Froh, Sefick, & Emmons, 2008). Creating something concrete helps children at this developmental stage articulate abstract feelings of appreciation. The visual reminder continues reinforcing gratitude beyond the activity itself.
Tips for Parents
Accept all drawings warmly, even if you cannot tell what they show. Your child's effort to express appreciation matters more than artistic skill.
Share something you appreciate about your child too. This models mutual appreciation and strengthens your bond.
Display their thank you picture where you both can see it. This reinforces the positive feelings and makes gratitude visible in your home.
