Your child chooses a skill they know well and teaches it to you, a sibling, or another family member. They plan what to teach and how to explain it. As they teach, they experience being the expert and see how sharing knowledge helps others learn. Afterward, discuss what went well and what was challenging about teaching.

How to Do This Activity

Your child chooses a skill they know well and teaches it to you, a sibling, or another family member. They plan what to teach and how to explain it. As they teach, they experience being the expert and see how sharing knowledge helps others learn. Afterward, discuss what went well and what was challenging about teaching.

Why It Works

Teaching others creates purposeful contribution and builds helper identity. Children who develop early sense of purpose show better self-regulation and academic engagement. Adolescents with strong purpose show better outcomes, and this identity develops through meaningful contributions. At this age, children understand others' perspectives and can explain cause-effect relationships clearly (Burrow & Hill, 2011).

Tips for Parents

Be an engaged student. Ask questions and show genuine interest in what your child is teaching. If they struggle to explain something, ask questions that help them think through it rather than taking over. This builds both communication skills and purpose.
