Why It Works
Learning to generate and test multiple strategies builds problem-solving skills and growth mindset. Research shows that growth mindset interventions enhanced performance through improved self-belief and effort regulation (Ba et al., 2025). Children at this age can plan and problem-solve systematically, making this an ideal time to explicitly teach strategic thinking as a learnable skill.
Tips for Parents
Ask open questions like, 'What's another way we could try this?' rather than giving the answer.
Validate all strategy ideas, even ones that might not work. Say, 'That's creative thinking.'
Share times when you had to try different strategies to solve your own problems.
