How to Do This Activity

Why It Works

Narrative skills and story comprehension build cognitive abilities including memory, sequencing, and cause-effect reasoning. Working memory and attention control developed through comprehension activities predict growth in emergent literacy skills (Welsh, Nix, Blair, Bierman, & Nelson, 2010). At this age, children have strong narrative skills and can understand complex story structures, making this an ideal activity for building school readiness skills.

Tips for Parents
