Save for something special
4–5 yearsSuccess MindsetMaterials: Sticker chart or coin jar
Small rewards
Help your child save stickers, coins, or tokens toward a specific goal they choose. Each day, they can add one sticker to a chart or one coin to a jar. When they reach the agreed number, they get the special item or privilege. This makes abstract waiting concrete and visible. Let your child help choose what they are saving for so they stay motivated.

How to Do This Activity
Help your child save stickers, coins, or tokens toward a specific goal they choose. Each day, they can add one sticker to a chart or one coin to a jar. When they reach the agreed number, they get the special item or privilege. This makes abstract waiting concrete and visible. Let your child help choose what they are saving for so they stay motivated.
Why It Works
Saving for future rewards directly builds delay of gratification skills. Research demonstrates that children who can delay gratification show better academic achievement, fewer problem behaviors, and better social skills that persist into adolescence and adulthood (Mischel et al., 1988). Making the waiting time visible helps four and five year olds, who are still developing their understanding of time.
Tips for Parents
Keep the goal achievable at first, maybe five to seven days rather than weeks.
Display the savings chart or jar somewhere your child can see their progress growing.
Talk about how good it feels to work toward something you really want.
