4–5 yearsSuccess MindsetNo materials needed

Play rhyming games where you say a word and your child thinks of words that rhyme. Practice identifying beginning sounds by saying several words and asking which one starts with a different sound. How to Do This Activity

Play rhyming games where you say a word and your child thinks of words that rhyme. Practice identifying beginning sounds by saying several words and asking which one starts with a different sound. Create silly sentences where all words start with the same sound. These phonemic awareness activities build pre-reading skills.

Why It Works

Phonemic awareness is one of the strongest predictors of reading success. Working memory and attention control applied to language sounds predict growth in emergent literacy skills and contribute to kindergarten reading achievement (Welsh, Nix, Blair, Bierman, & Nelson, 2010). At this age, children have sophisticated vocabulary and language skills, making them ready for sound-based language activities that prepare them for reading instruction.

Tips for Parents

Make it playful and silly. Nonsense rhyming words are fine and make the activity more fun. If rhyming is difficult, start with identifying words that start with the same sound, which is easier.
