How to Do This Activity

During daily activities or playtime, engage your child in extended conversations using open-ended questions. Instead of yes or no questions, ask questions like why do you think that happened, what would happen if, or how could we solve this problem. Encourage your child to explain their thinking and reasoning.

Why It Works

Rich conversations and reasoning activities build vocabulary, logical thinking, and verbal reasoning skills. These interactions develop the cognitive abilities that form the foundation for academic success. Research demonstrates that childhood cognitive ability, including verbal reasoning and vocabulary, predicts occupational success and income in adulthood (Spengler et al., 2015). Quality language interactions during this critical pre-kindergarten period maximize cognitive development and school readiness.

Tips for Parents

Wait patiently for your child to think and respond. The thinking process is valuable even if the answer is not perfect. Build on your child's answers with follow-up questions. This shows their ideas matter and extends their thinking.
