Present children with simple problems they must solve together as a team. For example, how can we move all these stuffed animals from one room to another in just two trips? Or, how can we build a bridge for toy cars using only these materials? Children must discuss ideas, try solutions together, and revise their approach based on what works. This teaches collaborative problem-solving and respectful disagreement.

How to Do This Activity

Or, how can we build a bridge for toy cars using only these materials? Children must discuss ideas, try solutions together, and revise their approach based on what works. Why It Works

Cooperative learning environments result in higher achievement on problem-solving and critical thinking tasks. Analysis of multiple studies showed that cooperative learning resulted in students achieving higher scores on problem-solving, reasoning, and critical thinking tasks compared to competitive environments (Roseth, C. J., Johnson, D. W., & Johnson, R. T., 2008). Children at this age can think logically about concrete situations and understand cause-effect relationships, making collaborative problem-solving developmentally appropriate and beneficial.

Tips for Parents

Let children try their ideas even if you can see they won't work. Learning from mistakes together is valuable. When children disagree about solutions, coach them to try both ideas and compare results. Ask, "What if you test both ways and see what happens?"
