Pattern block challenges
4–5 yearsSuccess MindsetMaterials: Pattern blocks, colored blocks, or household items in different shapes and colors
Use pattern blocks or colored shapes to create simple patterns for your child to continue. Start with basic AB patterns, then progress to ABC patterns. After your child masters continuing patterns, challenge them to create their own patterns for you to complete. This builds mathematical thinking and pattern recognition skills.

How to Do This Activity
Use pattern blocks or colored shapes to create simple patterns for your child to continue. Start with basic AB patterns, then progress to ABC patterns. After your child masters continuing patterns, challenge them to create their own patterns for you to complete. This builds mathematical thinking and pattern recognition skills.
Why It Works
Pattern recognition is a core cognitive skill that supports mathematical thinking and logical reasoning. Working memory skills developed through pattern activities in pre-kindergarten predict growth in numeracy skills and make unique contributions to kindergarten math achievement (Welsh, Nix, Blair, Bierman, & Nelson, 2010). This activity strengthens the executive function skills that are developing rapidly at this age.
Tips for Parents
Begin with two-color patterns and gradually add complexity. Let your child explain the pattern they see, which builds both reasoning and language skills.
If you do not have pattern blocks, you can use household items like buttons, pasta shapes, or colored paper cut into shapes.
