4–5 yearsEmotional WellbeingNo materials needed
Throughout the day, notice and point out kind things people do for each other. You might notice someone holding a door, sharing, or helping. Talk about what you see and how it might make people feel. Encourage your child to spot kindness too. At the end of the day, share what you each noticed. This builds awareness of how people care for each other.

How to Do This Activity
Throughout the day, notice and point out kind things people do for each other. You might notice someone holding a door, sharing, or helping. Talk about what you see and how it might make people feel. Encourage your child to spot kindness too. At the end of the day, share what you each noticed. This builds awareness of how people care for each other.
Why It Works
Noticing prosocial behavior helps children understand how healthy relationships work and motivates them to engage in similar behaviors. Social connection serves as a protective factor against stress, and students with strong relationships show significantly better engagement and lower disengagement rates. (Source: Fredricks, J. A., Blumenfeld, P. C., & Paris, A. H. (2004). School engagement: Potential of the concept, state of the evidence. Review of Educational Research, 74(1), 59-109.)
Tips for Parents
Model noticing by saying things like "Did you see how that person helped. That was kind."
Celebrate when your child notices kindness. Say "You're right. That was a kind thing to do." This reinforces their attention to positive social interactions.
