Kindness helper activity

3–4 yearsFamily ConnectionMaterials: Items for the chosen kindness activity

During your time together, choose one small act of kindness to do for someone else in your family. It might be drawing a picture for a sibling, bringing dad his slippers, or helping set the table for dinner. Before you do it, talk about how it will make that person feel. Ask, 'How do you think she'll feel when she sees this picture? What might her face look like?' After your act of kindness, notice the person's reaction together and talk about what you observed.

How to Do This Activity

During your time together, choose one small act of kindness to do for someone else in your family. It might be drawing a picture for a sibling, bringing dad his slippers, or helping set the table for dinner. Before you do it, talk about how it will make that person feel. Ask, 'How do you think she'll feel when she sees this picture? What might her face look like?' After your act of kindness, notice the person's reaction together and talk about what you observed.

Why It Works

Demonstrating compassion and responding sensitively to others' emotions are childhood behaviors that predict empathy development (Eisenberg et al., 2015). This activity moves beyond just talking about empathy to practicing it through action. Children at this age benefit from concrete experiences that connect their behavior to others' emotional responses. The immediate feedback from seeing someone's happy reaction reinforces empathetic behavior and motivates future kindness.

Tips for Parents

Start with simple helpful actions that your child can do mostly independently. Point out the other person's happy reaction to reinforce the connection between kind actions and good feelings. Take photos of your child helping to review and celebrate later.
