How to Do This Activity

Take turns acting out kind actions while the other person guesses. Show hugging, sharing, helping, or comforting someone sad. Talk about how these actions make people feel. Celebrate when your child guesses correctly or comes up with creative kind actions. This builds empathy and social emotional skills through active play.

Why It Works

Understanding how actions affect others' emotions develops empathy and interpersonal emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence includes self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills (Goleman, 1995). Acting out kindness during this theory of mind emergence period strengthens emotional competence that predicts social success.

Tips for Parents

Start by demonstrating a few kind actions yourself first. Focus on actions your child can actually do in real life. Connect each action to the emotions it might create in others.
