Sit together and create a story as a team. One person starts with a sentence, then each person adds the next sentence. You can act out the story together as it develops, with each person taking on different character roles. This activity builds listening skills, creativity, and the ability to build on others' ideas rather than just focusing on your own contribution.

How to Do This Activity

Sit together and create a story as a team. One person starts with a sentence, then each person adds the next sentence. You can act out the story together as it develops, with each person taking on different character roles. This activity builds listening skills, creativity, and the ability to build on others' ideas rather than just focusing on your own contribution.

Why It Works

Cooperative learning environments help children develop both social and academic competence. Analysis of 148 studies with over 17,000 adolescents showed that cooperative learning resulted in students being more accurate on academic tests and achieving higher scores on problem-solving, reasoning, and critical thinking tasks compared to competitive learning environments (Roseth, C. J., Johnson, D. W., & Johnson, R. T., 2008). At ages four to five, children can engage in complex cooperative play and understand others' perspectives, making collaborative storytelling developmentally appropriate.

Tips for Parents

If children try to control the whole story, gently remind them that everyone gets to add their ideas. Help children connect their sentence to what came before by asking, "What happens next after what your friend just said?"
