How to Do This Activity
Play music and dance together, then pause the music for your child to freeze in place. Keep freeze moments very brief at first, around 10 to 20 seconds. Gradually extend the pauses as your child becomes more comfortable. Make it playful by freezing in funny positions and celebrating successful freezes together.
Why It Works
The physical challenge of freezing on cue exercises inhibitory control in an engaging, playful way. Music and movement naturally appeal to toddlers while providing repeated self-regulation practice. The prefrontal cortex develops rapidly during ages 24-36 months, making this an optimal time to establish regulatory patterns. Children who develop attention and self-control skills early show better academic achievement as they grow (Blair & Diamond, 2008).
Tips for Parents
Start with very short freezes and slowly build up time.
Dance and freeze along with your child to model the behavior.
Celebrate the freezing, not just the dancing, to reinforce self-control.
