Freeze dance challenge
4–5 yearsSuccess MindsetMaterials: Music player or phone
Play music and dance together with your child. When you stop the music, both of you must freeze completely in whatever position you are in. Hold the freeze for five to 10 seconds, then start the music again. This game makes impulse control physical and fun. Your child has to stop their whole body quickly and hold still, which requires real self-control.

How to Do This Activity
Play music and dance together with your child. When you stop the music, both of you must freeze completely in whatever position you are in. Hold the freeze for five to 10 seconds, then start the music again. This game makes impulse control physical and fun. Your child has to stop their whole body quickly and hold still, which requires real self-control.
Why It Works
Physical impulse control games strengthen executive function skills that are rapidly developing in four to five year olds. Research shows that self-regulation skills at this age, particularly inhibitory control, predict academic achievement as learning material becomes more complex (Blair & Diamond, 2008). Making practice fun and physical helps children build these skills naturally.
Tips for Parents
Model freezing yourself and make it playful by freezing in silly positions.
Gradually increase how long you hold the freeze as your child builds their self-control.
If your child moves during a freeze, just gently point it out and try again rather than making it a failure.
