Sit together during activity time and take turns sharing how each person feels right now and why. You might start by saying, 'I feel tired because I worked hard today. How do you feel?' Encourage your child to name their feeling and explain it. Then ask, 'What would help you feel better?' or 'What made you feel that way?' This regular practice helps your child become aware of their own emotions and understand that others have feelings too.

How to Do This Activity
Sit together during activity time and take turns sharing how each person feels right now and why. You might start by saying, 'I feel tired because I worked hard today. How do you feel?' Encourage your child to name their feeling and explain it. Then ask, 'What would help you feel better?' or 'What made you feel that way?' This regular practice helps your child become aware of their own emotions and understand that others have feelings too.
Why It Works
Parental empathy toward children predicts children's own empathy development. Children with empathetic parents show significantly higher social competence (Liu et al., 2020). By sharing your own emotions openly and listening to your child's feelings with empathy, you model the emotional intelligence you want them to develop. This practice also teaches children that everyone has internal emotional experiences, supporting their emerging theory of mind at this sensitive developmental period.
Tips for Parents
Be honest about your own feelings to model emotional openness.
If your child can't name their feeling, offer choices like 'Do you feel happy or grumpy right now?'
Validate whatever feeling your child shares without trying to fix it immediately.
