Effort celebration moments

Throughout your activities together, actively notice and celebrate your child's effort, not just their success. When your child tries something challenging, say things like, I saw how hard you tried, or you kept going even when it was tricky. This helps your child connect effort with positive attention and builds the belief that persistence matters. Create small celebration moments like a high-five or happy dance when you notice strong effort.

How to Do This Activity

Throughout your activities together, actively notice and celebrate your child's effort, not just their success. When your child tries something challenging, say things like, I saw how hard you tried, or you kept going even when it was tricky. This helps your child connect effort with positive attention and builds the belief that persistence matters. Create small celebration moments like a high-five or happy dance when you notice strong effort.

Why It Works

Celebrating effort rather than just outcomes builds the growth mindset and perseverance that underlie optimism. Research shows that perseverance and optimism significantly predict achievement and that focusing on effort increases motivation and confidence (Ng, B., 2022; Seligman et al., 2009). When children receive positive reinforcement for trying, they develop the belief that their actions influence outcomes, which is foundational to optimistic thinking.

Tips for Parents

Be specific about what effort you noticed so your child understands what they did well. Celebrate partial progress and attempts, not just completion. This teaches that the process matters as much as the outcome.
