Cookie waiting challenge

3–4 yearsSuccess MindsetMaterials: Timer Two cookies or crackers per child

Place two cookies or crackers in front of your child. Explain that if they can wait five minutes without eating one, they'll get to eat both. If they eat one right away, they only get one. Set a timer so they can see the time passing. While waiting, help them use distraction strategies like singing a song or looking at a book together.

How to Do This Activity

Place two cookies or crackers in front of your child. Explain that if they can wait five minutes without eating one, they'll get to eat both. If they eat one right away, they only get one. Set a timer so they can see the time passing. While waiting, help them use distraction strategies like singing a song or looking at a book together.

Why It Works

This activity directly practices delay of gratification, a skill that predicts better life outcomes. Children who delayed gratification in similar tests had SAT scores approximately 210 points higher on average and showed better academic achievement and social skills in adolescence (Mischel, Shoda, & Peake, 1988). At 36-48 months, the prefrontal cortex is developing rapidly, making this an ideal time to practice self-control strategies.

Tips for Parents

Start with shorter wait times like two minutes and gradually build up to five minutes as your child gets better at waiting. If your child struggles, that's okay. Talk about what made waiting hard and try again another day with a shorter time. Praise the effort of trying to wait, even if they don't make it the full time.
