When your child feels upset or frustrated, create a special comfort routine. This might involve sitting together on a favorite chair, offering a gentle back rub, or simply being near them while they calm down. Respond to their distress with a warm, calm presence. You might say, "I'm here with you. Let me know when you're ready to talk." Stay patient and let them know you care about how they feel.

How to Do This Activity

When your child feels upset or frustrated, create a special comfort routine. This might involve sitting together on a favorite chair, offering a gentle back rub, or simply being near them while they calm down. Respond to their distress with a warm, calm presence. You might say, "I'm here with you. Let me know when you're ready to talk." Stay patient and let them know you care about how they feel.

Why It Works

Responding warmly to your child's distress helps them develop better emotional regulation skills. Maternal responsiveness to distress predicts better negative affect regulation, increased empathy, and more prosocial responding in children (Davidov & Grusec, 2006). When you consistently offer comfort during difficult moments, you teach your child that emotions are manageable and that you're a safe person to turn to.

Tips for Parents

Some children want close physical contact when upset, while others need space. Pay attention to what your child prefers. Keep your voice soft and your body language open. Avoid rushing them to feel better quickly. You can validate their feelings without fixing everything. Saying "That sounds really hard" shows you understand.
