Choice token game

3–4 yearsSuccess MindsetMaterials: Tokens or coins Small stickers Timer or a planned activity to mark the wait time

Give your child one token or coin. Explain they can trade it now for one small sticker, or wait until the end of playtime (about 10 minutes) to trade it for two stickers. Make the wait time visible with a timer or by saying 'after we finish this puzzle.' Let your child make the choice and experience the outcome either way.

How to Do This Activity

Give your child one token or coin. Explain they can trade it now for one small sticker, or wait until the end of playtime (about 10 minutes) to trade it for two stickers. Make the wait time visible with a timer or by saying 'after we finish this puzzle.' Let your child make the choice and experience the outcome either way.

Why It Works

Decision-making activities about immediate versus delayed rewards directly teach delay of gratification. Children who can delay gratification show better academic performance, with effects persisting into adolescence (Mischel, Shoda, & Peake, 1988). At 36-48 months, children are developing the cognitive ability to understand that waiting can lead to better outcomes, and repeated practice strengthens this skill.

Tips for Parents

Accept whatever choice your child makes without judgment. Learning happens from experiencing both options. If your child chooses to wait, help them put the token in a special spot and use distraction strategies during the wait. Try this activity regularly so your child can practice making different choices and learning from them.
