Building and rebuilding
2–3 yearsSuccess MindsetMaterials: Blocks, cardboard boxes, plastic containers, or other building materials
Gather blocks, cardboard boxes, or plastic containers. Ask your child to build something specific, like a house for a toy or a bridge. When they finish (or the structure falls), suggest building it again differently: 'Can we make it taller this time?' or 'What if we use different blocks?' This encourages them to approach the same goal multiple times with different strategies, building comfort with revision and repeated effort.

How to Do This Activity
Gather blocks, cardboard boxes, or plastic containers. Ask your child to build something specific, like a house for a toy or a bridge. When they finish (or the structure falls), suggest building it again differently: 'Can we make it taller this time?' or 'What if we use different blocks?' This encourages them to approach the same goal multiple times with different strategies, building comfort with revision and repeated effort.
Why It Works
Construction activities that involve multiple attempts and revisions teach children that achieving goals often requires trying different approaches and sustained effort. Research demonstrates that perseverance of effort is more predictive of achievement than natural ability (Duckworth et al., 2007). When toddlers rebuild and revise their constructions, they develop tolerance for setbacks and belief in their capacity to improve through continued effort.
Tips for Parents
Join in the building so they see you also trying different approaches and rebuilding.
Use language that normalizes rebuilding: 'Let's try another way' rather than 'Let's fix it.'
Take photos of each version if possible, helping them see their work across multiple attempts.
