Brain growing chart
4–5 yearsSuccess MindsetMaterials: Large paper or poster board
Stickers or markers
Pictures of brains (drawn or printed)
Make a visual chart showing skills your child is working on. Each time your child practices something challenging, add a sticker or mark to show their brain is growing. Focus on effort and practice, not whether they succeeded perfectly. Use simple brain imagery and talk about how practicing makes the brain stronger, just like exercise makes muscles stronger. Update the chart together every few days.

How to Do This Activity
Make a visual chart showing skills your child is working on. Each time your child practices something challenging, add a sticker or mark to show their brain is growing. Focus on effort and practice, not whether they succeeded perfectly. Use simple brain imagery and talk about how practicing makes the brain stronger, just like exercise makes muscles stronger. Update the chart together every few days.
Why It Works
Explicit teaching about how the brain grows through practice is a core growth mindset intervention. Growth mindset interventions enhanced student performance through improved self-belief and effort regulation, with internal and external growth mindsets having significant positive influence on academic performance (Ba et al., 2025). Visual tracking makes the abstract concept of brain growth concrete for young children.
Tips for Parents
Choose 2-3 skills your child is currently learning, like writing letters or using scissors.
Praise the practice itself. Say, 'You worked hard on that' instead of 'You're so smart.'
Refer back to the chart when your child feels frustrated to show how much they've already grown.
