How to Do This Activity

Have your child draw a picture of something specific like a person, animal, or house. Save it and practice drawing that same thing together several times over a few days. Compare the first drawing to later attempts and notice what's different. Talk about how practice helps us get better at things.

Why It Works

When children see concrete evidence of their own improvement through effort, they develop the belief that abilities can grow. This visual proof supports the development of growth mindset more effectively than just hearing that practice helps. Research shows that growth mindset interventions lead to 7-10% improvement in achievement because children learn to attribute success to effort rather than innate talent. (Blackwell, L. S., Trzesniewski, K. H., & Dweck, C. S. (2007). Implicit theories of intelligence predict achievement across an adolescent transition: A longitudinal study and an intervention. Child Development, 78(1), 246-263.)

Tips for Parents

Point out specific improvements: 'Look, in this one you added fingers. In this one the house has windows. You're adding more details each time.' Avoid comparing your child's drawings to others or to adult standards. Instead, compare their current work to their own earlier work. This helps them see their personal growth.
