What should we do today

Before you start your activity time together, sit down with your child and ask what they would like to do. Listen to their ideas and take them seriously. If their suggestion is feasible, do that activity. If it's not possible right now, acknowledge their idea and offer alternatives. "I hear you want to go to the park. We can't go now, but we could play with your outdoor toys inside or read a book about parks."

How to Do This Activity
Before you start your activity time together, sit down with your child and ask what they would like to do. Listen to their ideas and take them seriously. If their suggestion is feasible, do that activity. If it's not possible right now, acknowledge their idea and offer alternatives. "I hear you want to go to the park. We can't go now, but we could play with your outdoor toys inside or read a book about parks."
Why It Works
Asking for your child's input shows you value their opinions and preferences. Children who experience appropriate autonomy support show better academic achievement and social competence (Grolnick & Ryan, 1989). Regular practice making decisions about activities builds their confidence in having and expressing preferences, which strengthens your bond.
Tips for Parents
Take your child's preferences seriously, even when you need to say no to the specific request. Acknowledging their idea shows respect.
Sometimes they might not have strong preferences. That's fine. You can offer two options and let them choose from those.
