How to Do This Activity
Set out one set of crayons or markers to share between you and your child. Take turns choosing colors and drawing on the same large paper. Narrate what you're doing: 'I'm using the red crayon now. When I'm done, you can have it.' This models sharing language and shows that shared items come back.
Why It Works
Sharing is a complex social skill that develops gradually during this age range. Children need explicit modeling of sharing language and reassurance that shared items will return to them. Research demonstrates that for every one-point increase in social competence, children are twice as likely to attain a college degree in adulthood (Jones et al., 2015). Practicing sharing in low-stakes, supported situations builds this essential competence.
Tips for Parents
Start with fewer crayons so there are more chances to practice sharing.
Use a timer if your child struggles to wait, making the wait time visible and fair.
Comment when your child shares: 'You let me use the blue. That was kind.'
