Safe base exploration

How to Do This Activity

When your child is playing or exploring, stay nearby and available without hovering. Let them know you are there by occasionally making eye contact or offering a smile. When they come back to check on you, warmly acknowledge them before they return to play. This supports their growing independence.

Why It Works

Serving as a secure base allows your child to explore confidently while knowing you are available when needed. Secure attachments help children be independent and handle fear effectively (Canadian Psychological Association, 2024). Research shows securely attached children use their parent as a secure base for exploration, which predicts better social competence and school adjustment (Ainsworth et al., 1978).

Tips for Parents

Position yourself where your child can easily see you. This helps them feel secure while exploring. Respond positively when your child checks in with you. A smile or nod reassures them you are present. Avoid directing their play unless they ask for help. Let them lead their own exploration.
