How to Do This Activity

When challenges arise during play or daily activities, involve your child in solving them together. If a toy is stuck, blocks keep falling, or you can't find something, pause and say 'Let's figure this out together.' Brainstorm solutions and try them out as a team.

Why It Works

Cooperative learning environments lead to higher achievement on problem-solving and critical thinking tasks. Research across 148 studies showed consistent benefits of cooperative over competitive approaches (Roseth, Johnson, & Johnson, 2008). Collaborative problem-solving at 36-48 months builds on emerging logical reasoning and cause-effect understanding while developing the social competence that predicts school readiness and long-term academic success.

Tips for Parents

Resist solving problems immediately. Ask 'What could we try?' and consider your child's ideas seriously. Think aloud to model problem-solving: 'Hmm, that didn't work. What else might help?' Praise the collaborative thinking, not just finding the solution.
