How to Do This Activity

Before reading time, let your child choose which book to read together. Place two or three books where your child can see the covers. Ask "Which book should we read?" and wait for your child to point, touch, or bring you the book they want. Read the book they selected.

Why It Works

Book selection gives your child control over a meaningful part of your shared routine. This simple choice respects their growing autonomy while maintaining connection through reading together. Balanced autonomy within secure attachment predicts better outcomes than either extreme of control or permissiveness. Children who experience appropriate autonomy support show better social competence and relationship quality (Grolnick & Ryan, 1989). Choosing the book honors your child's preferences while you stay connected.

Tips for Parents

Limit choices to two or three books. Too many options can overwhelm a young toddler. Honor their choice even if you just read that book yesterday. Repetition helps learning at this age. If they change their mind after you start, that is okay too. Flexibility supports healthy autonomy.
