When your child hands you something, picks up a toy, or tries to help in any small way, immediately say thank you with warmth and enthusiasm. Make eye contact and smile. This shows your child that their contributions matter and are noticed. Even small attempts at helping deserve recognition. Your appreciation teaches them that kindness goes both ways in relationships.

How to Do This Activity
When your child hands you something, picks up a toy, or tries to help in any small way, immediately say thank you with warmth and enthusiasm. Make eye contact and smile. This shows your child that their contributions matter and are noticed. Even small attempts at helping deserve recognition. Your appreciation teaches them that kindness goes both ways in relationships.
Why It Works
Expressing appreciation to your child daily models reciprocal gratitude and builds their sense of worth. When children experience being appreciated, they learn to appreciate others. Research demonstrates that childhood behaviors including acknowledging efforts and demonstrating appreciation through actions predict stronger parent-child bonds and better emotional communication (Froh & Bono, 2014). Regular expression of gratitude in family settings enhances parent-child communication quality and emotional intimacy, teaching children to show greater empathy and consideration (Watkins et al., 2003).
Tips for Parents
Be specific about what you appreciate. Say thank you for handing me the book instead of just thank you.
Show genuine warmth in your response. Your tone and expression teach as much as your words.
Thank your child for simply being present. Say thank you for playing with me to build appreciation beyond tasks.
