How to Do This Activity

Sit together comfortably and take turns sharing something from your day. You might each share one good thing, one hard thing, or one thing you learned. Listen to your child without interrupting, then share your own experience. Show interest by asking follow-up questions about what your child shares.

Why It Works

Regular sharing time establishes patterns of open communication that last throughout life. Research demonstrates that adults who learned to communicate openly and respectfully with parents during childhood report significantly higher relationship satisfaction (Hartos & Power, 2000). This routine practice teaches children that their thoughts and feelings matter, while developing their ability to express needs clearly and listen attentively.

Tips for Parents

Model the kind of sharing you hope to see by being honest about your own feelings and experiences. Avoid jumping to fix problems your child mentions. Just listen and acknowledge their feelings first. Keep sessions short at first, around five minutes, and build up as your child becomes more comfortable.
