How to Do This Activity
When your child is upset, hurt, or frustrated, respond immediately with warm physical comfort and a soothing voice. Pick them up, hold them close, and offer gentle words of understanding. Stay emotionally present until they are calm. Your warm responsiveness to distress teaches them they can count on you when things are hard.
Why It Works
Maternal responsiveness specifically to distress predicts better negative affect regulation, empathy development, and prosocial behaviors in children (Davidov, M., & Grusec, J. E., 2006). When parents respond warmly to upset feelings, children learn to trust their emotions will be met with support. This builds the foundation for healthy emotional regulation and empathy toward others.
Tips for Parents
Respond quickly to signs of distress rather than waiting to see if they calm alone.
Use a warm, soothing tone even if the upset seems minor to you.
Stay physically close until your child signals they are ready to move on.
