Build with shared materials

Give your child and yourself the same materials: a set of blocks for each of you. Build your own structures side by side. Comment on what your child is making. Occasionally share a special piece: 'I have an extra red block. Would you like it?' This parallel play sets the stage for cooperative play.

How to Do This Activity

Give your child and yourself the same materials: a set of blocks for each of you. Build your own structures side by side. Comment on what your child is making. Occasionally share a special piece: 'I have an extra red block. Would you like it?' This parallel play sets the stage for cooperative play.

Why It Works

Parallel play with the same materials is the developmentally appropriate bridge to associative and cooperative play during this age range. Children at 24-36 months are naturally transitioning from solitary play to more interactive forms (Parten, 1932). Providing parallel play opportunities allows children to observe and learn from others while maintaining their own space. This gradual approach to cooperation respects developmental readiness and builds comfort with shared activities. Effective social skills developed during this period predict educational completion and stable employment in adulthood (Durlak et al., 2011).

Tips for Parents

Set up parallel play opportunities with enough materials that sharing isn't forced. Comment positively on your child's building to show interest in their work. When your child naturally offers you a piece, accept it and thank them warmly.
