Let your child lead parts of the bedtime routine by making simple choices and doing tasks themselves. They might choose which pajamas to wear, put their clothes in the hamper, or get their toothbrush ready. Use the same sequence each night so they can predict and lead the steps. This builds autonomy and the sense that they can manage important parts of their day.

How to Do This Activity

Let your child lead parts of the bedtime routine by making simple choices and doing tasks themselves. They might choose which pajamas to wear, put their clothes in the hamper, or get their toothbrush ready. Use the same sequence each night so they can predict and lead the steps. This builds autonomy and the sense that they can manage important parts of their day.

Why It Works

When toddlers take ownership of routine tasks and make simple decisions, they develop a sense of agency and capability. Goal-directed activities and following through on routines build foundational purpose orientation. Children engaged in meaningful activities and routines develop stronger goal-setting abilities (Malin, Liauw, & Damon, 2017), and experiencing oneself as capable is essential for developing a sense that one's actions matter.

Tips for Parents

Offer simple choices between two options to keep decision-making manageable. Use consistent language for each step so they can learn to anticipate what comes next. Celebrate their growing independence with phrases like, "You got yourself ready for bed. You know what to do."
